What exactly is "the Good News" of Jesus?

Dear Friends,

In the course of doing the layout for Tom Lee's commentary today I found myself asking: what exactly is this "Good News of Jesus" that we all claim we follow? I suspect there are probably as many different answers to that question as their are Catholics in the world. It's a great sounding expression, isn't it? I know I profoundly disagree with the interpretation some people put on what they think the Good News is. And I'm pretty sure those I would disagree with would also disagree with my understanding of the Good News. It seems to me the diversity of responses is increasing as time marches on. Tom Lee's commentary might suggest to us today that this is not a particularly new problem. There were sharp differences of opinion in the earliest Church over different interpretations of what Jesus was on about — and what he was calling us to. Tom's commmentary today and next week looks at the transitions that took place in the course of the mother Church moving from Jerusalem to Rome. <Link to Tom's Lee'scommentary>

FURTHER ESSAY FROM TOM DOYLE: You might also be interested in a new and provocative essay by Fr Tom Doyle that I've just draw attention to on our forum. The essay is entitled "Dishonoring My Regiment". <Link to Tom Doyle's essay>

Wishing you a great day wherever you happen to be ... in life and in our world.
